Ahp-cii-uk is a new way for Aboriginal communities to work with mainstream society to reach their visions. Ahp-cii-uk builds long-term relationships between First Nations, corporations, government, and other organizations to develop community economic and social projects at the grass roots.
Through Ahp-cii-uk, the three Nuu-chah-nulth First Nations of Ahousaht, Tseshaht, and Ehattesaht have developed visions and chosen social and economic development projects suitable to their long-term goals.
With the help of Ahp-cii-uk partners, Aboriginal communities are bridging the gaps between resources available and the communities’ ability to access them. These gaps have often fostered a cycle of dependancy and poverty.
Corporate, government and non-profit partners are working as peers with Aboriginal participants, developing relationships and gaining knowledge of Nuu-chah-nulth culture and wisdom. They are also building leadership skills and knowledge of best practices in partnering with First Nations.
A Community Action Project fund was raised from participating partners. This seed funding is being used to research and develop community action projects. Project plans are drawn up and this money is being used to leverage funds from other sources.
After little more than one year of working in communities, Ahp-cii-uk is indeed “going the right way”. Accomplishments include the creation of jobs and business opportunities, development of a tourist destination, training in life and employment skills, and re-vitalization of community pride and spirit. As importantly, partners are learning to work together in a good way, using consensus decision making, where everyone’s voice is heard.
Ahp-cii-uk was started by four Initiating Partners. Both Health Canada and the BC Ministry of Aboriginal Relations and Reconciliation are funding the Initiative. The Nuu-chah-nulth Tribal Council is supporting Ahp-cii-uk through its organization. Expertise on multi-sectoral partnerships is also offered by Synergos Institute.
Ahp-cii-uk is a pilot project for social and economic development in First Nations. Its success will provide a model that can be used and adapted throughout Canada.
